Monday night’s programme comprises, in part, Prokofiev, Donald Byrd, only the lonely Sinatra, Nic Jones, low-key Black Sabbath (!) and Richard Strauss; as well as a secular choral work by Bob Chilcott. The English composer/conductor has often worked with children; a recent 2-CD of Chilcott’s music contains three pieces which feature young voices. “The Angry Planet” (see video) includes that particular environmental cantata, as well as “Five Days That Changed The World” and “The Miracle Of Spring”. More coming from the release tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday.

Happy Christmas everyone!! We’ve an earlier start - and much later finish - for the Friday night edition of BLUE. As well as the usual blend of late night sounds - Fred Hersch, Danish String Quartet, Richard Gilewitz, Joni Mitchell et al - Eamonn airs Max Richter's "Sleep" in its entirety. This new ground-breaking work (see video) was composed to fall asleep to; lasts more than eight hours; and is an exploration of how music interacts with consciousness. Richter’s series of musical variations puts the art of listening at its very core. So let the fire die down, draw the covers up tight and be part of this unique listening experience on The Blue of the Night. Marathon broadcast tonight!!
